Tender Opens for Solar Minigrids in Fiji

10 Apr 2025  by pv magazine
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is seeking suppliers to express interest in installing solar minigrids across rural areas in Fiji. This opportunity involves engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) tasks, as well as the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the minigrids and their communication systems. The initiative falls under the UNDP’s Fiji Rural Electrification Fund projects, aimed at improving electricity access in remote villages through solar energy solutions.

The minigrids will provide power to communities on the Fijian islands of Kioa and Yacata, as well as the village of Yadrana. Suppliers selected for this project will play a key role in delivering sustainable energy to these locations. The tender allows multiple companies to collaborate on a joint bid, with the solar provider preferably taking the lead role in implementation.

According to the tender documents, the current expressions-of-interest phase is designed to identify suppliers interested in participating in an upcoming formal solicitation process. This next stage is set to begin by December 2025, giving companies time to prepare. The deadline for submitting the expression of interest questionnaire is April 9, 2025, aligning with the project’s timeline to advance rural electrification efforts.

This project reflects a broader effort to enhance living conditions in Fiji’s rural regions by leveraging renewable energy. The solar minigrids will ensure a reliable power supply for the targeted communities, supporting daily needs and fostering development. The UNDP emphasizes the importance of capable suppliers to execute both the technical installation and ongoing upkeep of these systems.

Interested parties are encouraged to review the tender details and submit their questionnaires by the specified date. This initial step will determine which suppliers proceed to the competitive bidding phase later in the year. Through this process, the UNDP aims to establish partnerships that will effectively bring clean energy to Kioa, Yacata, and Yadrana, contributing to sustainable progress in Fiji.
