NTPC Launches 50 MW Solar Project in Sri Lanka

10 Apr 2025  by asian-power
NTPC Limited, an Indian energy company, has begun operating a 50 megawatt (MW) solar power project in Sri Lanka, as announced in a recent statement. This initiative, with potential to expand to 120 MW, reflects NTPC’s strategy to extend its operations into neighboring countries. The project is a step toward enhancing regional energy cooperation and sustainability.

The solar facility is being developed through Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a joint venture equally shared between NTPC and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). With an estimated investment of $100 million, this collaboration aims to strengthen Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure. The project’s first phase, covering the 50 MW capacity, is now underway, supported by key agreements.

TPCL has secured a power purchase agreement with CEB, ensuring the sale of electricity generated, alongside an implementation agreement with the Sri Lankan government for Phase I. These contracts provide a solid foundation for the project’s execution and long-term operation. The initiative is designed to deliver clean energy while aligning with broader environmental goals.

This solar project contributes to diversifying Sri Lanka’s energy sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. NTPC estimates it will prevent approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, supporting efforts to lower the country’s carbon footprint. The facility’s location in Sri Lanka positions it to meet local power needs efficiently, with the potential for future growth to 120 MW enhancing its impact.

NTPC’s expansion into Sri Lanka through TPCL underscores a commitment to sustainable energy development beyond India. The 50:50 partnership with CEB combines expertise and resources, fostering a balanced approach to project management and benefits. The $100 million investment reflects confidence in the project’s viability and its role in the region’s energy transition.

By launching this 50 MW solar project, NTPC is helping Sri Lanka build a cleaner and more resilient energy mix. The agreements with CEB and the government ensure a structured rollout, with Phase I marking the beginning of a scalable effort. As the project progresses, it promises to deliver reliable power while supporting environmental sustainability in the region.
