Basque Hydrogen, a consortium led by Spanish company Petronor, a Repsol subsidiary, alongside Enagás Renovable, a subsidiary of Enagás, and the Ente Vasco de la Energía, the Basque Government’s energy agency, has chosen German electrolyzer manufacturer Sunfire to supply a 10-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer for a green hydrogen project in Bilbao, Spain. The initiative marks a significant step in advancing sustainable energy solutions in the region.

The project will utilize Sunfire’s pressurized alkaline technology to produce green hydrogen. The 10 MW facility is designed to generate up to 200 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour, powered by renewable electricity. Repsol plans to use this hydrogen to manufacture e-fuels, which offer a promising pathway for reducing carbon emissions in sectors where electrification is challenging. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2026.

Sunfire’s CEO, Nils Aldag, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating: “Spain is a very exciting market for us! The country offers strong conditions for green hydrogen projects with its geographic location and industrial expertise.” The project aligns with Sunfire’s goal of supporting global efforts to expand renewable hydrogen production.

Repsol’s Hydrogen Director, Maribel Rodriguez Olmo, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, saying: “At Repsol, we are committed to forming the best alliances, such as with Sunfire, to attract part of the hydrogen value chain to Spain, not only as a production hub but also to boost industry and industrial employment in the country.” The collaboration underscores Repsol’s focus on fostering innovation and economic growth through sustainable energy initiatives.

Bilbao, a key industrial center in Spain’s Basque Country, serves as an ideal location for this project. The region hosts numerous companies and research institutions dedicated to hydrogen development, making it a hub for clean energy innovation. For Repsol, Bilbao represents a vital location for advancing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon footprints across its operations.

The Basque Hydrogen project reflects a shared vision among the consortium partners to leverage renewable resources and cutting-edge technology to support a cleaner energy future. By producing green hydrogen, the initiative contributes to the decarbonization of hard-to-electrify industries while strengthening Spain’s position in the global hydrogen economy. The partnership between Basque Hydrogen and Sunfire highlights the importance of international collaboration in achieving sustainability goals and fostering economic development through renewable energy advancements.
