February 11 (Renewables Now) - Construction has been completed at EDP Renewables’ 205-MW Bright Stalk wind farm in Illinois, civil contractor Mortenson said on Friday.
Located in McLean County, the wind park is powered by V136 3.6 MW turbines by Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) with an estimated annual production that will be enough to cover the consumption of around 73,000 average local homes. The construction required an investment of around USD 320 million (EUR 293.4m), according to the project’s website.
US retailer Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) has committed to buy the output from a 123-MW portion of Bright Stalk’s capacity under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA). Cloud computing company Salesforce (NYSE:CRM), meanwhile, has in place a virtual PPA for 80 MW of the capacity, also for 15 years. Both PPAs were signed in 2018.
EDP Renewables presently operates more than 1 GW of wind assets in Illinois. Its portfolio in the state will expand further in the coming months after the commissioning of the 200-MW Harvest Ridge wind farm in Douglas County.
