The impact of Coronavirus on China's Photovoltaic Supply Chain

25 Feb 2020
Analysts briefed on the impact of the pneumonia outbreak on China's photovoltaic supply chain.

The outbreak of the new coronavirus in China did hit global photovoltaic module supplies, but the actual impact of the outbreak may not be as pessimistic as people think.

1.

China has between 72 and 96 percent of the world's manufacturing capacity for crystalline silicon products, and factories outside China make batteries and components that rely on Chinese supplies of silicon wafers and batteries.
Therefore, the impact on China's photovoltaic industry chain will not only impact the market of the destination country of China's photovoltaic module export, but also affect the market of components purchased from other countries, such as the United States.

2.

Photovoltaic supply was affected by the outbreak mainly from three aspects: first, due to travel restrictions and up to 14 days of home quarantine period, workers can not return to work on schedule;
2. Materials such as packaging, junction box and aluminum frame are in short stock, so the supply is limited.
Many raw material suppliers shut down during the Spring Festival, making it difficult to resume production.
Iii. The overall logistics speed is slow due to the small number of trucks, road control and the isolation period of goods exported from China to some countries.

3.

The global price of photovoltaic modules remains basically stable, and the impact on the photovoltaic manufacturing industry is generally under control.
This is due to the large manufacturers during the Spring Festival to maintain a high operating rate and materials inventory.
And most photovoltaic manufacturing locations are relatively unaffected by the outbreak.

BNEF expects the outbreak to affect less than 5% of component production for the full year.
If the epidemic can be controlled in the first quarter of this year, the oversupply of photovoltaic industry chain and the continuous expansion of manufacturers will ensure sufficient supply of photovoltaic products in 2020.
