The 288-MW Askaelen wind farm in Sweden, owned by Dutch pension fund manager APG, is now operational.
Built by Vasa Vind, the park comprises 80 Vestas V136 3.6 MW turbines, installed in Jämtland county. Commercial generation started on April 1.
Swedish energy trading company Modity, which is in charge of the trading and balancing of the park’s output, said the wind farm is expected to produce up to 930 GWh annually. When the output of nearby parks is added to the calculation, this output reached 1.1 TWh.
An updated short-term forecast by the Swedish Energy Agency in March showed that the country is expected to double its wind farm output to 38 TWh in 2022 from 16.6 TWh thanks to strong capacity growth.
Bloomberg recently cited BloombergNEF onshore wind analyst Oliver Metcalfe as saying that Sweden can expect “rock bottom power prices” when windy periods coincide with high hydropower plant (HPP) output. This will hit conventional power generators the most. Early this month, low power prices forced certain nuclear power plants (NPPs) in the country to reduce capacity.
