The facility, located in Australia, will convert hydrogen gas into liquefied hydrogen, then dispatched to Japan. It will be produced using brown coal mined from the Latrobe Valley in the state of Victoria.
The pilot project will create a foundation to develop a hydrogen export industry in the country, according to Kawasaki.
“Delivering clean hydrogen to the world for the benefit of our environment is a goal we share deeply and we look forward to achieving,” said Shigeru Murayama, Kawasaki's chairman, in a release.
“The hydrogen economy is already materializing in Japan, and it is wonderful to now be breaking ground here in Australia,” he added.
The facility will start operations in 2020.
