UK Govt Extends Feedback Window for CfD Changes Due to COVID-19

May 15 - The UK government has extended the consultation period for expressing opinions regarding the planned changes of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme by a week due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) initiated the process in March in order to receive input on the proposed changes that would potentially allow onshore wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) projects to compete in the next tender round, together with offshore wind. The revamped structure envisages two category groups -- for established and less-established technologies, with remote island wind falling in the second one.
Interested parties will be able to express their opinions by May 29. The forthcoming allocation, as part of CfD Round 4, is set to open in 2021 and will be the first such auction since 2015.
The proposed changes are planned to be undertaken to support the country’s ambition for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Cornwall Insight recently projected that the combined volume of projects that will potentially be eligible to take part in the Round 4 competition stands at 13 GW, with 5.5 GW of the total seen to be onshore wind and solar.
