China Leads the World in Nuclear Power Safety

China is one of the countries in the world where the utilization of nuclear energy is developing rapidly, and China ranks first in the world in the number of nuclear power units under construction. With the continuous deepening of nuclear energy utilization and the emergence of new technologies, how to safely utilize and develop nuclear energy has become one of the most concerned topics in the society. In the upcoming 14th five-year Plan, nuclear energy utilization will be accelerated, and nuclear safety work becomes particularly important.

China started its nuclear power industry late, and has absorbed mature international experience in the design, construction and operation of nuclear power plants.Up to now, China has 47 nuclear power units in operation, with good safety performance. There have been no operational incidents on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale level 2 or above.

The operational nuclear power plants meet the requirements of China's current nuclear safety laws and regulations and the safety standards of the Iaea. They are fully capable of responding to design benchmark accidents and have certain capabilities of serious accident prevention and mitigation. The safety of operational nuclear power plants is guaranteed.

New nuclear power units such as AP1000, EPR and Hualong one have taken into account the prevention and mitigation of serious accidents from the design stage, and their design safety level has been further improved.Four AP1000 and two EPR units have been successfully fully debugged and put into commercial operation, making China the first country in the world to master the commissioning and operation technology of a new generation of nuclear power plants.
