After the installation of all 60 wind turbine generators by the American multinational company General Electric, the main construction activities of the Kipeto wind power project in the Esilanke area of the Ngong Hills in Kenya’s Kagado County have been completed.
This is an important milestone for the project, as the project makes the farm expected to be fully operational by the end of this year, providing Kenyan electricity and lighting companies (national electricity distributors and retailers) with cheaper renewable energy sufficient to power them . According to a 20-year power purchase agreement signed in 2015, there are at least 40,000 households.
The installed capacity of the Kipeto wind power plant is expected to reach 100 MW, which is the second largest wind power plant in East Africa after the Turkana wind power project.
The Kipeto wind farm is part of US President Barack Obama's "African Electricity" plan, which aims to add 30,000 megawatts of clean energy in sub-Saharan Africa.
